RISK CLASSIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED DUI INTERVENTIONS IN ILLINOIS

The State of Illinois requires individuals convicted of a DUI to complete an evaluation and, based on clinical findings, participate in an “intervention.” In this legal and clinical context, the term “intervention” refers to required education or treatment services ordered by the court or Secretary of State—not a family-led confrontation or counseling session.

The evaluation determines one of four risk levels, each with a corresponding intervention:

-
Minimum Risk
Clients with no prior DUI offenses, a BAC under .15, and no signs of substance misuse. This level requires the 10-hour DUI Risk Education course.

-
Moderate Risk
Assigned when BAC is between .15 and .19, or if the individual refused testing, or has one symptom of a substance use disorder. This level requires both the 10-hour Risk Education and a 12-hour Early Intervention program.

-
Significant Risk
Assigned when there is a prior DUI conviction, a BAC over .20, or two to three substance use symptoms. Intervention includes 10 hours of Risk Education, 20 hours of Substance Use Treatment, and Continuing Care services.

-
High Risk
Assigned to individuals with multiple DUIs or four or more symptoms of a substance use disorder. This level requires 75 hours or more of Substance Use Treatment and Continuing Care.
The goal of each intervention is not only legal compliance but also to support long-term recovery, reduce the risk of future offenses, and educate clients on the consequences and risks associated with impaired driving and substance use.

UNDERSTANDING THE CLOUDGATE DUI EVALUATION AND TREATMENT PROCESS

Cloudgate Healthcare follows a clearly defined process that ensures clients receive professional and efficient services:

1. Initial Contact and Scheduling
Clients begin by contacting Cloudgate Healthcare to ask questions or schedule an intake. Staff members explain the process and help identify which services are required. Appointments are offered during daytime, evening, and weekend hours to accommodate work, school, and family obligations.

2. Evaluation Appointment
The first clinical step is a comprehensive DUI evaluation. This appointment is conducted online or in-person and includes a review of the client’s alcohol and drug history, DUI arrest reports, driving abstract, and other clinical information. A client’s risk level is determined during this stage.

3. Risk Classification and Intervention Assignment
After the evaluation, the appropriate risk level is assigned, and the recommended intervention is discussed. The client is enrolled in the relevant education or intervention service.

4. Delivery of Services
Risk Education classes, Early Intervention, and Treatment Groups are delivered online or in-person. Treatment focuses on education, substance use reduction, relapse prevention strategies, and the health and legal consequences of impaired driving.

5. Documentation and Completion
Upon successful completion of the assigned intervention, Cloudgate Healthcare provides official documentation. This includes a Risk Education certificate (when applicable), treatment documents, continuing care reports, and other relevant documents. For Secretary of State hearings, treatment needs assessments, responses to denial and investigative reports are prepared as needed.
